📋 Overview
The Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship is one of the most prestigious and comprehensive scholarship programs for international students, offering approximately 9,000 scholarships annually worldwide. The program provides full financial support for undergraduate and graduate studies at Japanese universities.
For Myanmar students, applications are processed through the Myanmar Association of Japan Alumni (MAJA) in coordination with the Embassy of Japan. The scholarship covers full tuition, monthly living allowance, airfare, and Japanese language training.

📚 Program Types & Duration
1. Research Student Scholarship (Graduate Level)
Duration: Up to 7 years (including preparatory course)
- 1.5-2 years: Research course (preparatory, non-degree)
- 2 years: Master's degree program
- 3 years: PhD program (optional)
Eligibility: Bachelor's degree holders (including prospective graduates), under 35 years old
2. Undergraduate Student Scholarship
Duration: 5 years total
- 1 year: Preparatory course (Japanese language + EJU exam preparation)
- 4 years: Bachelor's degree program
Eligibility: High school graduates or prospective graduates, age 17-22 years old
3. Teacher Training Scholarship
Duration: 1.5 years
Eligibility: University graduates with at least 5 years teaching experience, under 35 years old
✅ Eligibility Requirements
General Requirements:
- Must be a Myanmar national currently living in Myanmar
- Must have graduated from a Myanmar or foreign university
- Must maintain minimum GPA of 2.30/3.00 (or equivalent)
- Must be in good health, both physically and mentally
- Must not be already enrolled in a Japanese university
Age Limits (as of April 1, 2026):
- Undergraduate: Born between April 2, 2001 and April 1, 2007 (17-22 years)
- Research/Graduate: Born on or after April 2, 1991 (under 35 years)
- Teacher Training: Born on or after April 2, 1991 (under 35 years)
Academic Requirements:
- Undergraduate: Completed 12 years of education (high school diploma)
- Master's: Bachelor's degree (16 years of education)
- PhD: Master's degree (18 years of education)
Language Requirements:
- Japanese language proficiency is NOT required at application
- English proficiency certificate (TOEFL/IELTS) is recommended but not mandatory
- If your university taught in English, submit an English Proficiency Certificate from your institution
📝 Application Process for Myanmar Students
Registration (April 14 - May 6, 2026)
Register through Google Form provided by MAJA. Detailed information available at studyinjapan.go.jp
Document Submission (May 7-14, 2026)
Submit complete application documents to MAJA office in Thingangyun Township, Yangon (in person or by post) by 3:00 PM on May 14
Written Test (May 17, 2026)
Eligible candidates announced May 15. Written examination in Japanese/English and subject-related topics held at Yangon exam station
Interview (May 31 - June 1, 2026)
Test results announced May 20. Qualified candidates invited for interview conducted by Embassy of Japan
University Placement (June - September 2026)
Successful candidates request Letter of Acceptance from Japanese universities. MEXT coordinates university placement
Final Results (Around June 2026)
MEXT announces final scholarship recipients. Successful candidates receive notification via email
Departure to Japan (April 2027)
Scholars depart for Japan to begin preparatory course or degree program
📄 Required Documents
Download from studyinjapan.go.jp or Embassy website, completed in English
Official transcripts from all universities attended, with grading system explanation, verified with official stamps. English translation required if original not in English
Official certificate verified with stamps. Prospective graduates must submit expected graduation certificate. English translation required if not in English
For graduate students: Detailed research proposal (1,000-1,500 words) explaining motivation, research background, and prospective study. Must be specific and realistic
For graduate students: Letters from professors/advisors/employers who can evaluate academic performance and research potential, written in English
Detailed CV including education, work experience, publications, awards, and relevant activities
Scanned copy of valid passport (if available at time of application)
Recent passport-sized photos (specifications provided in application guidelines)
TOEFL/IELTS scores OR certificate from your university confirming English as medium of instruction
For research students: Copies of academic papers, thesis, or relevant publications
Proof of online registration through MAJA's Google Form system
